NEW Florida Law on Diabetes Management in Schools — And HowWe Can Support Your Classroom

What Is HB 597?
HB 597 is a new Florida law that allows public and charter schools to stock emergency, undesignated glucagon—a critical, FDA-approved medication for treating severe low blood sugar in students with Type 1 Diabetes.

Florida schools now have the opportunity to take a powerful step toward protecting students with Type 1 Diabetes.

If your school hasn’t already, we encourage you to ask your district to stock emergency glucagon and ensure properly trained staff are on site. Touched by Type 1 proudly offers this training at no cost—led by real medical professionals, in person or virtually.

What to Know About HB 597

1. Schools May Stock Glucagon
Florida public and charter schools are now authorized to maintain a supply of undesignated glucagon—meaning it’s not prescribed to a specific student but can be used in a severe hypoglycemic emergency.

2. Only Trained Personnel May Administer
If a school chooses to stock glucagon, it must ensure that only trained personnel are allowed to administer it. Training helps staff recognize the signs of a diabetes emergency and respond quickly and appropriately.

3. How Schools Can Acquire Glucagon
Schools may obtain glucagon through:

  • Local health department prescriptions

  • Donations or grants

  • Manufacturer discount programs

  • Direct purchase

4. Safe Storage Is Required
Any stocked glucagon must be stored securely, yet be immediately accessible during an emergency. It must also follow manufacturer storage guidelines to ensure it remains effective.

5. Emergency Protocols Must Be Followed
If glucagon is administered, the school must:

  • Call 911 immediately

  • Notify the school nurse (if not present)

  • Contact the student’s parent or guardian as soon as possible

Why This Law Matters
